lanes and drifts

Back in time

From the year 700, arable villages began to develop in De Maashorst. Think of villages such as Uden, Nistelrode and Schaijk. In these villages lived farmers, each with their own cattle.

In order to provide the cattle with sufficient food, the farmers let their cattle graze on the heath. Every day they took the same route to the heathland. In this natural way, lanes (wide sandy roads) and drifts (narrow sandy paths) were created. To this day, the paths and roads are anchored in the landscape of De Maashorst.

Imagine yourself in the past and plan your trip along the avenues and drifts in the area.
