Large grazers

the grazers in the primeval area

The arrival of people has changed the nature reserve considerably in recent centuries. In order to restore it, nature is now given space. There are also three impressive grazers that ensure that the natural landscape becomes what it once was: wild, pure and authentic.

With open spaces and dark forests. With colourful heathlands, marshy pools and towering trees. Where plants and animals feel completely at home and humans are spectators. A real primeval area. So don’t forget your binoculars. With a natural primal instinct – and a bit of luck – you are guaranteed to spot a wisent, tauros or Exmoor pony.

How do the grazers live?

The European bison became extinct in the wild in Europe about 100 years ago, but fortunately it has recently returned to the Netherlands. The bison is also called the Brabant pearl of the Dutch Big Five, and that is certainly not without reason. In De Maashorst, the large grazers feel completely at home.

Want to know more about the share of the grazers? Then watch the video in which Marieke Schatteleijn (forest ranger) and Colinda Vergeer (coordinator herd management) go in search of the herd animals together. They show how the grazers live here, what traces they leave behind and how the animals play their part in the preservation of the nature reserve.
