In De Maashorst, the municipalities of Bernheze, Maashorst and Oss work together with Staatsbosbeheer and the Aa en Maas water council on the development of the nature reserve. They do this on the basis of a joint vision and a development and management plan.
Area Vision 2050
Why a new Area Vision? Due to new developments in society and in the area, the Maashorst Manifesto from 2009 is due for renewal. For example, climate change requires a new approach to how we deal with water; think of the visible drought in the area. It is also important to find a good balance between nature and recreation.
With this Area Vision we update the objectives and outline a robust future vision for De Maashorst in 2050. Because nature development takes time.
This Area Vision outlines a clear perspective for the long term, towards which we will grow in steps. We build on the current developments in the area and the Maashorst Manifesto from 2009. The aim of the Area Vision is: To provide direction for future developments in De Maashorst.
Area Vision
In nature reserve De Maashorst we strive for a common final image: a nature reserve in which natural processes are leading. But a nature reserve that our residents can enjoy. The most important subjects from the vision are:
- Soil and water are guiding factors in spatial planning
- Reaffirmation of the ambition to strive for process nature
- Balance between recreation and nature: not everything is possible everywhere
- Gradual expansion of grazing from 2035

IBeP [ Development and Management Plan ]
In 2015, the first Development and Management Plan (IBeP) for De Maashorst was drawn up. We have now updated this plan. The new IBeP applies for the period 2023 to 2028.
We are building on the experiences and developments in the area. Of course, the ambitions from the new Area Vision have also been translated into new goals and measures up to and including 2028.
In doing so, we have taken into account external developments, such as nitrogen deposition, drought and climate change. But also social developments, such as a great need for recreation and a longer period of getting used to grazing by the public.
The IBeP 2023-2028 has now been established by the municipal boards of Maashorst and Oss. The decision-making in the municipality of Bernheze will follow in March/April 2024.
MaashorstManifest
The MaashorstManifest from 2009 describes the target image for 2020, with appealing proposals for possible implementation. The aim of the MaashorstManifest was to further expand and broaden the original vision from 2005. This also included a current implementation strategy. The four themes from the MaashorstManifest are depicted in a vision map.
The nature plan, the water vision and the plans regarding the branding of the Maashorst and the recreational gates, which are not repeated in the Maashorst Manifesto, are an inseparable part of it. The Maashorst Manifesto will be updated in 2023 in a new Area Vision.
